I used to be the kind of person who refused to have a job during school semesters. I explained it by saying I wanted to be completely focused on school and not have any other distractions keeping me from getting the highest grades possible. I would work during my summers, but as soon as the fall semester rolled around, I'd remain unemployed so I could put all my time into my studies. However, as you get older, life happens and your parents can't support you 100% forever. So having a job became necessary for me. Maybe I've just been spoiled and everyone reading this right now is like well duhhhh. But for all you lazy girls like me who don't want to work during the semester, have a quick read. I now realize that not only is having a job while you're in school totally possible, it's actually beneficial. And here's why.
I'm not suggesting you work 30+ hours while also going to College full time. While I do know some people who can somehow manage this, I cannot. Nursing is an extremely demanding program, and as someone who feels unfulfilled if I'm not getting high marks, I wouldn't be able to do it. However I do work 10-15 hours a week now and I feel like it's made me a better student and person.
1) It improves your time management skills
I think this is the most important thing you can gain from having a part time job while also in school. I used to be the kind of person who procrastinated on doing things and studying because I could. Now I find myself getting things done a lot sooner because I don't have time to waste. I often tend to work Monday evenings and have tests on Tuesday mornings. In the past, I would normally procrastinate and do the bulk of my studying on Monday evenings, but that isn't an option for me anymore. I find that now I get my work done a lot sooner and I actually find myself working harder when I am studying since I need to make the most out of my time.
2) It allows you to socialize outside of your immediate group of classmates
While this may not apply for everyone, when you're in a demanding program that takes up a lot of your time, your free time to spend with other friends/meeting new people is greatly diminished. Having a job allows you to actually meet new people outside of your group of classmates and actually get to socialize with other people, even if just in a professional manner.
3) You have extra pocket cash
Hell yeah, best bonus. While you wont necessarily be swimming in cash, it's nice knowing you have a little cash in the bank and you aren't a completely broke student. Especially around the holidays.
4) You become a more efficient and hard working person
As I mentioned in #1, you now have a lot less time you can spend procrastinating and wasting, so you make yourself more efficient to manage more things in less time. It's also a good skill to be able to manage more than 1 responsibility at once!
Again, not a particularly Christmassy blog post but something that I've been thinking about and felt like writing about! Let me know what you think
